ETTI organizes its scientific work across three interconnected domains, advancing the theoretical foundations, clinical applications, and global integration of EMDR therapy.

These three research areas are not separate silos but mutually reinforcing dimensions of a coordinated scientific agenda. Mechanistic understanding informs clinical refinement; clinical evidence drives implementation; implementation challenges raise new mechanistic questions. ETTI fosters integration across all three.

Mechanisms and Models of Change

Neural, cognitive, and computational foundations.

The ETTI advances scientific understanding of EMDR therapy through research on neural, cognitive, and computational mechanisms — including memory reconsolidation, affective updating, and predictive processing. This area integrates computational psychiatry and artificial intelligence to model therapeutic change, identify treatment response patterns, and refine mechanistic theories across individuals and disorders.

Clinical Applications and Precision Psychotherapy

Transdiagnostic evidence and patient-centered care.

The ETTI conducts systematic investigation of EMDR therapy across psychiatric conditions, including:

  • Stress- and trauma-related disorders
  • Depression and anxiety
  • Somatoform disorders
  • Primary psychotic disorders
  • Mental health sequelae of major somatic illness
  • Neuroimmunological and pain disorders

The focus is on transdiagnostic applications and treatment personalization, supported by digital and hybrid care models. Emerging technologies — including AI-assisted treatment adaptation and extended reality (XR) — are explored to enhance therapeutic processes and expand clinical reach. Patient involvement is a core principle, encompassing participatory study designs, patient-reported outcomes, and the integration of lived experience into intervention development and evaluation.

Implementation, Standards, and Global Integration

Training, quality, and health-system integration.

The ETTI develops evidence-based training frameworks, competency models, and internationally harmonized standards for EMDR therapy. This area addresses large-scale implementation within health systems — including integration into clinical guidelines — and explores scalable delivery through digital platforms and AI-supported decision tools to improve access and quality of care worldwide. Particular emphasis is placed on safety, quality assurance, and ethical standards: systematic monitoring of adverse events, risk management protocols, and safeguards for both traditional and technology-assisted EMDR interventions.

Flagship Program

The ETTI coordinates an international research network to identify gaps, conduct multicenter studies, and accelerate integration of EMDR therapy into evidence-based treatment guidelines. The network operates as a digitally-connected infrastructure enabling shared protocols, collaborative data analysis, and cumulative knowledge generation across global sites — with embedded standards for patient involvement and safety throughout.
